Director Curtis Hanson (who brought us "L.A. Confidential" and "8 Mile") is working on the movie Of Men and Mavericks, a sports drama film based on the life of surfer Jay Moriarty. The film is starring Jonny Weston in the lead role as Jay Moriarty and Gerard Butler as his mentor. The release date of the movie Of Men and Mavericks is set for October 26, 2012. Here's the official plot synopsis:
Plot:
"Based on the inspirational true story of surfing icon Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston), 'Of Men and Mavericks' tells the story of a young man's quest to surf Northern California's most dangerous wave, and the local legend (Gerard Butler) who takes him under his wing. What begins as a mentorship turns into a unique lifelong bond, as the two unlikely friends discover that there is nothing more powerful than pushing your limits and chasing a nearly impossible dream."
For those who aren't familiar with surfing, Mavericks is actually a surfing location in Northern California, USA. After a strong winter storm in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can routinely crest at over 8m and top out at over 24m. Jay Moriarty was made internationally famous when, at age 16, he made the cover of the magazine Surfer riding an insane big wave over there. Take a look to the famous cover below:
